FATHER'S DAY SWELL. The JUNEASTER VIDEO.

Another father's Day is upon us. This makes 27 for me. Hard to believe, but then again there are enough mirrors in my house to verify that fact. Let's face it, we're all getting old. Some of us are on the slippery slope. But hey, that's life. There's no great mystery there.

But back to Father's Day. I remember my first one. Gabby was just little over a month old. I can remember my father dropping by to see Gabby and I shot video of him singing to her. There's video of Cory's dad seeing Gabby for the first time. It was his first time being a grandfather. Same with Judith's husband John. It was new to all of us. We were all basking in the sun of being new parents and grandparents.

You've heard parents say that you get to relive your own childhood by having kids. While that may be true, you also experience new adventures. Like the one above. On our way back from our annual Thanksgiving in Virginia, we stopped at Gettysburg. For me, that was a treat. And I know it was for Cory and Max. The girls (bless their hearts) put up with a lot of macho stuff.

But there were history lessons to be learned. And they absorbed it all.

Then there are the new Dads. Like Mike here. Happy Father's Day Mike.
The key to being a good dad is to be a fun dad. You want to make your kids smile and laugh. In other words don't get caught up in your work or other things where you will neglect your kids. Keep it fun. Go to the beach. What kid doesn't love the beach?

Clearly Mike is going to be a fun dad. Same with this guy below.

If you don't have a sense of humor, you have no business being a dad.
Brian here has a sense of humor and his daughter will have heaps of laughs with her dad. Happy FIRST Father's Day Brian!

There were some glassy waves on Saturday. As a photographer who also happens to love the empty wave, I can get into a trance watching glassy waves pour onto our shores. As you can see, they don't call these conditions glassy for nothing. That looks like glass.

Here's Mikey Moran cutting through the glass on his longboard. Mikey (who's also a dad) is in my honest opinion the First true traditional Longboarder we have around here. His style and quirky antics on his board has always been fun to watch and shoot.

Mike's funny when there's a crowd. He will sit way outside and be the most patient person out there. It's only a matter of time before he picks off one of the set waves and does his thing. I see others stop what they're doing to watch Mikey. I shot some good sequences of Mikey that are in the gallery this week. Be sure and check them out.

Been shooting the women for the upcoming GRANITE GIRLS movie. Ive been getting some good footage and good stills of the girls. I'll be keeping you all updated as we move forward on this project.

Happy father's day to All the dads. Past, present, and future.

This week's Ed's corner pic is from June 30th, 2013. I think this is Zack Bru but it's hard to tell with his arm blocking the lower part of his face. But it sure looks like a fun day day. A fun glassy day, much like we had here this week. Photo by Ed O'Connell

Now for Some More Of My Weekly Global Observances
The group that we had over for the Super Bowl got together at our home last night to watch 3 Games To Glory. If you haven't seen it you really need to check it out. It really well done. It was great watching the AFC Championship and then the Superbowl.

We skipped the Divisional game against the TEXANS. That game was too ugly to sit through. The Steelers and the Falcons games were more than enough. I was wondering before we started to watch it, if I would get agitated again watching that first half. I mean Good Lord we were down 28-3 with under 3 minutes in the 3rd qtr.

It was highly unlikely that the Patriots would win this game.

But we all know what happened. The Biggest comeback in NFL history. In fact, watching it again from the mic'd up perspective was a whole new experience. Edleman was a non stop positive force. He actually said "This is going to be one hell of a story." When we were down 28-3. You could see his teammates looking at him with that "What the hell are you talking about?" look.

I mean, the coaches, the players, and the fans were in shock.

Hey check this out! From my old friend Jamie Hosker.

KSM Photoshop of the Week
OK, so it's Father's Day. And it's observed down in GITMO. So it should be no surprise to any of you if KSM had a visit from his young son Kahliddy. I'm not sure if you can see the resemblance here in this photo. Especially if you're on a I-phone.

But his kid looks amazingly just like him. *Note the child has facial hair. I'm guessing that he'll have some chest hair too, once he gets a little older. Like say, a month or two from now.

So my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed).

*Note to self -must pick up a case of Diapers and some NAIR at Home Depot this week.

Prayers and positive thoughts to Erica Nardone's recovery.

Prayers and positive thoughts to surfer Jason Kooken who suffered
a spinal cord injury in New Jersey last month.

Finally, I watched this guy struggling out in the water the other day. He couldn't get past the first line of whitewater. But he was undaunted. He kept going back out. He'd ride the whitewater only. He couldn't get to his feet. As I looked down at him from the wall, I wondered if I was looking into a crystal ball. Is this going to be me in 10 years?

JUNEASTER June 7-8-2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

The welcomed Nor'easter we got on June 6th, 2017 that gave us 3 solid days of waves. All the points, reefs, and beaches were firing. I shot from NH to ME. And while the overall conditions were not exactly ideal, the vibe in and out of the water was filled with laughter. Why do surfers have to be so cruel to one another, especially when watching your buds get smoked out in the water? I don't know, but it's always been that way. We hoot when someone gets a good wave, and we howl when someone eats shit. Ha...I'm smiling now just writing this.

This web edit is a first for me. The shooting was shared with Kyle Linseman's cool Drone footage. I can foresee a partnership working with Kyle. He's stoked about shooting the action. And make no mistake about it, Kyle can rip. So for him to sacrifice his own surf time to shoot, speaks volumes of his new found passion. The music is by Meshell Ndegeocello and John Digwood. I'm stoked about this one. Hope you will be too.

MOTHER'S DAY SWELL May 14-15-16-2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo. This is the web edit for the 3 Day Mother's Day Swell. It never really got bigger than head high. And it rained the first two days. Still, it was surf, and beggars can't be choosers now can we. I did the edit today after hearing about the death Chris Cornell, lead singer for Soundgarden. He had a great voice. It's ironic because I was looking for the right song to go with this edit. And I believe I found it with Black Hole Sun. The surfers that I can remember are: Kai Nichols, Tom Hay, Andy Elliott, Mikey Moran, Skip Brunette, Erik Zak, Kody Grondin, Chris Stelman, Max Fatello, Mikey Evans, and a handful I couldn't ID. This is for all the mothers. past, present, and future. And it's in memory of Chris Cornell.

The Forgotten Go Pro Footage 2014-2016 Part 1
from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

This is a series of web edits that was all shot on my old GoPro. How old? Well it's the HERO II. So that's 3 GoPros ago. Did I just write that? I guess I did. Any way, this first edit was shot on the last day of Summer in 2014. The surfers are (that I can remember) : Perry Reynolds, Kai Nichols, Lenny Nichols, Mike Rosa, Zach Bru, Bryan Johnson, Kyle Linesman, Kenny Linseman, and a bunch of others. *You might want to take some Dramamine before watching this. It's all water shots, so no tripods were used. Music is by Trentemoller and Grenier.

The Forgotten GoPro Footage Part II 2014-2016 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

More of the GoPro footage I had lying around. It's pretty much small wall footage. Though, it is noteworthy a the clips of Kevin Grondin were all shot on his birthday last Jun 23d, 2016. The rest is mostly empty waves with Mackey getting a few. The real cool thing about this web edit is. 50 years ago today, May 12th, 1967, The Jimi Hendrix Experience released their debut LP. This song was on that record. And I remember it all like it was yesterday. Funny thing is, the song is as current today as it was 50 years ago. Do check it out.
